Read the tale of Prof. Dr. Yubaraj Sangroula’s rise and struggles—along with the narratives of this remarkable moment.
Born in Subhang, Panchthar in 2016 B.S., Prof. Dr. Yubaraj Sangroula’s birth was not just the arrival of an individual—it signaled the beginning of a new era in Nepal’s legal education and intellectual spheres. With advanced degrees in Law and Criminology, Dr. Sangroula chose to forgo numerous opportunities abroad, instead committing to contribute to his homeland. Rejecting residential perks and high-paying offers from prestigious universities in developed countries, he devoted himself to nation-building through education—a calling that kept him committed to the sacred profession of teaching for 38 years. His guiding principle in life was: to move forward guided by the well-being of the nation and its citizens. Never swayed by material luxury or greed, his unwavering character established him as a fearless, outspoken, and principled speaker.
Dr. Sangroula’s philosophy was centered around a vision of a developed Nepal based on its own civilization, culture, and indigenous production. He consistently prioritized domestic resources and potential while dreaming of a self-reliant Nepal. He believed scholars should walk the path of truth and progress, and educate those misled by illusions to show them the right way. Hence, true scholars are meant to change the world—not chase after the misinformed masses. This perspective positioned him not only as a scholar but also as a visionary leader and a carrier of social transformation.
Kathmandu School of Law (KSL) is a living testimony to Dr. Sangroula’s dream, struggle, and continuity. Established with the active participation of nine individuals, this institution has become a milestone in the realm of legal education in Nepal. As Executive Director of KSL, Sangroula led the institution to national and international acclaim. Under his guidance, KSL developed the concept of original legal education, which added a new dimension to Nepal’s academic scene.
KSL is not merely an academic institution—it is a symbol of intellectualism, research, and social responsibility. By conceptualizing a community college model, Sangroula presented a unique example of inclusion and excellence in education. His leadership provided a sense of guardianship to KSL, constantly inspiring students, professors, and staff. His contribution will remain immortal in KSL’s 25-year history. This institution, established by his team, has educated thousands of students in law and produced capable leaders in Nepal’s judiciary and administrative fields. In this sense, it is natural to feel joy while remembering his contributions and the institution’s accomplishments, while his absence in leadership will bring pain and longing.
The most distinctive aspects of Dr. Sangroula’s personality are his intellect and diplomatic abilities. In matters of foreign affairs and diplomacy, his fact-based and evidence-supported arguments, grounded in historical records and international treaties, were particularly remarkable. His ability to engage in powerful, well-substantiated debates with counterparts has played a vital role in elevating Nepal’s status in international forums—a widely discussed achievement. Whether in international conferences or diplomatic dialogues, he consistently placed Nepal’s interests at the center of his arguments.
Sangroula’s eloquence and style of reasoning based on facts and logic established him as a rare intellectual figure. During the establishment of the SAARC University, he provided counterpoints to Indian expansionist and condescending attitudes through in-depth studies of historical facts and legal foundations. At various forums, he has represented Nepal’s position strongly to the global community. His diplomatic skills have helped raise Nepal’s identity, respect, and credibility internationally. Dr. Sangroula never compromised on Nepal’s dignity and always stood firm for truth and justice in diplomatic negotiations. These contributions have firmly established him as a true nationalist intellectual.
Prof. Dr. Sangroula is not only a professor and diplomat but also a globally renowned writer and thinker. His books, articles, and research have introduced new perspectives in the fields of legal education, history, and social philosophy. His writing deeply reflects patriotism, social justice, equality, and the importance of cultural preservation. He has always emphasized the use of indigenous products and domestic resources, providing guidance for Nepal’s socio-economic advancement.
Dr. Sangroula’s writings have influenced not only Nepal’s intellectual community but also international scholars. His thoughts and perspectives have played a significant role in highlighting Nepal’s civilization, culture, and history to the world. His writing combines logic, fact, and literary elegance—traits that establish him as an exceptional thinker.
Dr. Sangroula’s fame and recognition made some people uncomfortable. His outspoken nature and firm stance on truth made him a target of criticism from certain groups. On Ashar 30, 2081 B.S., during a Himalayan Development Council program, some participating scholars expressed serious concern over a false accusation of sexual misconduct levied against Sangroula, seeing it as an attempt to tarnish his reputation. This incident not only exposed a tragic aspect of Nepalese society but also highlighted how false allegations are sometimes used to weaken nationalist and intellectual personalities.
Despite the encirclement and conspiracies, Sangroula maintained his unwavering character and courage—a fact acknowledged by many. Retired General Prem Singh Basnet advised him to ignore such baseless accusations and continue working strongly in the national interest. This suggestion reflects the deep trust and respect society has for Sangroula’s work. He himself remarked that such challenges would not deter his selfless commitment to the nation and its people.
Alongside Prof. Dr. Sangroula, seven others who made significant contributions to KSL’s development and growth also retired on the 31st:
Prof. Prakash KC: One of KSL’s founding members, active for 42 years in human rights advocacy and teaching. He completed his LLM from Hong Kong University.
Prof. Hong Kong Rana: Played a pivotal role as Academic In-Charge in curriculum design and academic leadership. He has about 37 years of teaching experience.
Prof. Dr. Kumar Ingnam: PhD in International Trade and Law, he was instrumental in launching the LLM program in Ilam. As an author and teacher, his absence will be strongly felt.
Dr. Ganesh Bhattarai: PhD in Criminal Law, he taught criminal law, criminology, and forensic science.
Bishwomani Pokharel: An assistant professor and LLM graduate from KSL, he was also a coordinator in music and performing arts.
Harisharan Khatri: A senior administrator at the college.
Sudha KC: Postgraduate in Sociology, also retired.
Dr. Sangroula’s retirement leaves a great void not just in KSL but in Nepal’s entire academic and intellectual landscape. However, his unshakeable legacy will forever inspire future generations. The founding of KSL, the innovation in legal education, his diplomatic influence, and patriotism define his life. His courageous and principled character has consistently encouraged Nepalese society to speak out for truth and justice—though it has sometimes cost him dearly.
Thus, attempts to incite false accusations against him by certain individuals reflect the vulnerability of our society. Yet his strong character and societal support have overcome these challenges, as noted by those who know him closely. The path he showed keeps alive the dream of building a prosperous, self-reliant, and dignified Nepal.
Prof. Dr. Yubaraj Sangroula is a personality whose intellect, courage, and patriotism have left an immortal imprint on Nepal’s academic, diplomatic, and social scene. During the SAARC University establishment, his representation shook Delhi’s expansionist bloc. His revolutionary vision for legal education and his role in enhancing Nepal’s global dignity are the pillars of his life’s work. Has his retirement marked the end of an era?
Sangroula says: “Though the responsibility of teaching a limited number of students has ended, the responsibility of showing the path of truth to the broader Nepalese society has now begun.” Therefore, his ideas, perspectives, and contributions will continue to inspire Nepal’s future. The path he paved will keep guiding us toward truth, justice, and national interest.
Such a legendary and not only intellectual but also nation-devoted personality has, through his contribution and dedication, built a non-profit institution where every student has received not just academic knowledge but also integrity, patriotism, dedication, honesty, and strong values. The academic environment of the college has already been firmly established. Now, the new generation has taken on the responsibility of taking it even higher.
“My generation and I, who invested in this college, accepted sacrifices, and during times of rise and fall loved this institution more than our own children and families—have brought it to this point and gained it recognition as a prestigious institution globally. Retirement should not be seen as a departure. We will always remain deeply involved in the welfare of this college,” Dr. Sangroula said. “Therefore, just like yesterday, tomorrow also our investment and contribution in KSL will remain; only our role, form, and method will have changed,” he added.
On the 31st of Ashar, 2082, when Prof. Dr. Yubaraj Sangroula formally retired from Kathmandu School of Law (KSL), both students and staff remarked that not only KSL but the entire academic field of Nepal had experienced a loss. However, it is natural that those who conspired against him behind the scenes would now feel emboldened. Nevertheless, it has been clarified that his retirement was due to the age limit.
Hence, for some, the retirement of Dr. Sangroula and the others is a source of laughter, and for others, it has brought tears. Yet his contributions have left an everlasting mark on Nepalese society.
In law, it is accepted that lawyers may represent any side in a case as a professional duty. However, Dr. Sangroula believes it is unethical to represent anyone just for monetary gain. Holding to this principle, he turned down significant financial opportunities and refused to advocate for Afatab Alam, instead choosing to stand with the victims.
Dr. Sangroula’s approach in every matter is principled and distinct. He says, “Every profession must maintain its dignity and ethics. I don’t believe everyone should do as I do, but I take pride and satisfaction in doing what I believe is right.” For this reason, he stands out as an exceptional and rare individual in today’s self-centered world.
However, not only in Nepal but across the globe, his sacrifices, contributions, and values are not yet fully understood or appreciated. Nonetheless, his strong principles and professional integrity will surely inspire future generations. Thus, this news has brought tears to the academic world and joy to his opponents.
